Field Service Diesel Technician

Are you the mechanic people call when nobody else can work it out?

Mariner Engineering is looking for a diesel technician with exceptional problem-solving ability.

What matters is that you know how to diagnose problems properly, think mechanically and take ownership of a job until it is finished.

We are looking for someone who can walk onto an unfamiliar job, assess the situation, develop a plan and get the equipment operating again. You may need to diagnose an intermittent fault, adapt a component, fabricate a bracket, repair damaged wiring or make a simple tool to complete the work.

You will have access to technical information, diagnostic equipment, OEM support and an experienced team—but we need someone who can also think independently when the answer is not immediately obvious.

About the role

Mariner Engineering provides mobile mechanical services for recreational and commercial vessels throughout Melbourne.

We are an authorised Volvo Penta and Yanmar dealer, working on vessels generally ranging from 20 to 80 feet. We also regularly work on engines and equipment from Cummins, Caterpillar, Scania, John Deere, MAN, MTU, Nanni and other manufacturers.

This is a hands-on field-service role involving fault diagnosis, repairs, maintenance, engine replacements and mechanical installations.

Most work is completed aboard vessels at marinas around Melbourne, supported by our workshop and team in Spotswood.

You will normally work Monday to Friday, from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. There is no FIFO roster, no scheduled night shift and no requirement to participate in an after-hours breakdown roster.

What you will be doing

• Diagnosing mechanical, fuel, cooling, starting, charging and basic electrical faults
• Testing systems methodically instead of replacing parts until the problem disappears
• Servicing and repairing inboard diesel engines and associated equipment
• Repairing transmissions, driveline components, steering systems and running gear
• Completing engine removals, installations, repowers and commissioning
• Tracing wiring faults using a multimeter, wiring diagrams and diagnostic equipment
• Fabricating or modifying simple brackets, mounts and components when required
• Developing practical repair methods for unusual or unfamiliar problems
• Performing work aboard vessels, including in machinery spaces and confined areas
• Communicating clearly with customers and explaining findings and recommended repairs
• Preparing accurate service reports, job notes, photographs and parts requirements
• Supporting apprentices and less-experienced technicians
• Taking ownership of jobs from initial diagnosis through to testing and completion

Some days will involve scheduled servicing. Other days, you may be investigating a fault that has already defeated another technician.

This role will suit someone who enjoys variety and gets genuine satisfaction from solving difficult mechanical problems.

You may be the right person if you:

• Are an experienced diesel mechanic, field-service technician or mechanical technician
• Have strong fault-finding and diagnostic ability
• Understand how diesel engines and their supporting systems operate
• Can distinguish the cause of a problem from its symptoms
• Are competent with mechanical measuring and workshop equipment
• Can perform basic electrical testing with a multimeter
• Can fabricate, modify or adapt a simple component when a standard solution is unavailable
• Are comfortable working independently and making sensible decisions in the field
• Take responsibility for the quality and completion of your work
• Communicate professionally with customers and colleagues
• Keep your vehicle, tools and work area organised
• Are willing to learn unfamiliar engines, systems and marine applications

You will ideally have:

• A recognised mechanical trade qualification, such as diesel mechanic, heavy vehicle mechanic, mobile plant technician, marine mechanic or an equivalent qualification
• A current Australian driver licence
• The right to work in Australia
• A forklift licence, marine experience, welding ability and OEM training are advantageous but not essential.
• We are also prepared to consider a highly capable candidate whose experience does not fit neatly into a conventional job title.
