House Assistant/Houseman – Hampshire

We are delighted to be working with a private family based in the beautiful Hampshire countryside, close to Petersfield, to assist in hiring a full-time House Assistant. This is a wonderful opportunity to join a welcoming household and play a key role in the smooth running of a charming rural property set within the South Downs. The successful candidate will work closely with the family to ensure the home is impeccably maintained and all day-to-day needs are met with efficiency and care.

The property serves primarily as a weekend and holiday retreat for a family of two adults; all four children are now away from home, either at boarding school, university, or based in London. The House Assistant will be an all-rounder, comfortable managing both hands-on household tasks and broader logistical support. An external part-time cleaner is in place, whom this candidate will help supervise. The position may also involve occasional trips to the family’s London base as required.

Accommodation will be provided off site for the right candidate should they not be based within a commutable distance. A competent driver is essential, as logistics and local travel form an integral part of the role. The family also has a much-loved Labrador, and on very rare occasions the House Assistant may be asked to take him to veterinary appointments. Please note: this role involves weekends. Your days off will be mid-week.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain the cleanliness and presentation of an eight- to nine-bedroom country house to an excellent standard.
• Oversee and supervise the external part-time cleaning team during visits.
• Manage laundry, ironing, and garment care to an impeccable standard.
• Assist with kitchen tasks and occasional meal preparation when required.
• Lay the table, assist with service, and ensure the home is guest-ready at all times.
• Run personal errands for the family, including local driving and logistics support.
• Arrange and coordinate professional services including pool maintenance, ice machine servicing, air conditioning, and other contractors.
• Liaise with the gardener and assist with outdoor jobs when required.
• Carry out light handyman tasks and troubleshoot day-to-day maintenance issues.
• Assist with logistics including booking hire vehicles, transporting furniture or belongings to London, and collecting family members.
• Ensure all household supplies are well-stocked and organised at all times.
• Source, brief, and manage supplementary staff for occasional events and larger gatherings.
• Assist with very occasional veterinary appointments for the family’s Labrador.

Ideal Candidate

• Previous experience within a private household, luxury chalet or yacht.
• A confident all-rounder, comfortable with housekeeping, laundry, errands, and logistical support.
• Competent driver with a full, clean UK driving licence.
• A flair for cooking and willingness to assist in the kitchen when the occasion calls for it.
• Proactive, resourceful, and able to use initiative.
• Well-presented, discreet, and professional at all times.
• Comfortable working independently as well as supervising others.
• Flexible and adaptable, with a positive and willing attitude.
• A genuine love of the countryside and a relaxed, friendly disposition.
• Comfortable around dogs.

Package

• Working schedule: Thursday – Monday (Tuesday and Wednesday off).
• Live-in accommodation available – rental property provided locally.
• Travel expenses covered.
• Annual holiday allowance.
• Salary: £50,000 – £60,000 per annum.
