What is the STCW-95 Basic Safety Training course package?

The 5 day STCW 95 course is required to be undertaken by all seafarers in accordance with section A-Vl/1 of the STCW Code. The Basic Safety Training course is intended to ensure that seafarers are aware of the hazards of working on a vessel and enables you to respond appropriately in an emergency. STCW 95 Basic Safety Training is an ideal course for anyone looking for basic safety training at a recreational level or those wishing to make a career at sea.

The four STCW 95 courses below make up the mandatory STCW familiarisation and basic safety training requirements for all seafarers. These are traditionally booked as a complete package, however can be booked as individual modules if required.

STCW 95 Elementary First Aid
STCW 95 Personal Survival Techniques
STCW 95 Personal Safety and Social Responsibility
STCW 95 Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting

Those attending the STCW 95 Basic Safety Training course package will also receive the Proficiency in Security Awareness course at no extra cost. This is in accordance with the STCW 2010 Manila amendments and became mandatory on the 1st of January 2014 for all seafarers that did not have specific designated security duties.

The modules listed within the Basic Safety Training course package are a requirement for commercially endorsed Yachtmaster Offshore or Ocean that are working towards the MCA STCW Master Yacht 200 Tonnes (OOW 500 tonnes). The Basic Safety Training requirements covered under the STCW Code are also required by Masters and deck officers in commercial vessels over 24m in length and less than 500GT.

This course contains some exercises that are physically demanding. Any candidate unsure of their fitness for such activities should consult their doctor.
