STCW Basic Safety Training is a week long course consisting of four important component courses for any mariner.

Topics include:

  • First Aid/CPR
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibility
  • Personal Survival Techniques
  • Basic Fire Fighting

On Friday during the Basic Firefighting Portion of the course, students will be attending the CT Fire Academy. They will be in charge of finding their own transportation.

Under the terminology of the STCW Convention, Basic Safety Training is made up of the above four courses. Successfully completing these courses ALONE does NOT meet the requirements for issuance of a STCW Certificate of Proficiency by the USCG. You must have one other "rating" to go along with Basic Safety Training in order to be issued a Certificate of Proficency.

For some, Basic Safety Training, which meets STOW Requirements, is required for hiring reasons to meet some insurance requirements.
