Course description

This course is intended to provide knowledge to those who may be designated to perform the duties and responsibilities of a Ship Security Officer (SSO), as defined in section A/2.1.6 (and section A/12) of the ISPS Code and in section A-VI/5 of the STCW Code, as amended.

Certification and approval

Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a certificate of proficiency. The course is approved by the Maritime Administration of Ukraine (IMO white list) on the syllabus "SHIP SECURITY OFFICER".

Delivery method

The course is delivered through an online learning platform and consists of lectures, videos, quizzes and case studies.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Maintain and supervise the implementation of a Ship Security Plan
  2. Assess security risk, threat and vulnerability
  3. Undertake regular inspections of the ship to ensure that appropriate security measures are implemented and maintained
  4. Ensure that security equipment and systems, if any, are properly operated, tested and calibrated
  5. Encourage security awareness and vigilance
  6. Respond to changes in the maritime security levels

  2. IMO Model Course 3.19: Ship Security Officer.
  3. BMP5: Best Management Practices to Deter Piracy and Enhance Maritime Security. in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea.
  4. IMCA - Security Measures and Emergency Response Guidance.
  5. IMO MSC.1/Circ.1334 Guidance to shipowners and ship operators, shipmasters and crews on preventing and suppressing acts of piracy and armed robbery against ships.

Entry requirements

This course prepares candidates to perform the duties of a SSO, such as developing and implementing a ship security plan, identifying and assessing security risks, operating and testing security equipment, enhancing security awareness, coordinating and communicating with other security personnel, and responding to security incidents and emergencies.
