This is the essential training for the commercial maritime industry.
Our five day STCW Basic Safety Training package provides the practical skills and knowledge to be certificated for the five mandatory modules of training as laid down in the STCW code, these are
- Personal Survival Techniques (STCW A-VI / 1-1)
- Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (STCW A-VI / 1-2)
- Elementary First Aid (STCW A-VI/ 1-3)
- Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (STCW A- VI/1 – 4)
- Proficiency in Security Awareness (STCW VI/6, paragraph 1 and Section A-VI/6, paragraph 4)
Content & Objectives
- Personal Survival Techniques includes preparation for sea survival, lifejackets and liferafts, principles of survival, raft management and search and rescue. The course includes a practical in-water session.
Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting includes learning the risks of fire & their prevention, use of fire fighting equipment, responding to emergencies and fighting & extinguishing fires. The course includes extensive practical sessions on our on-site fire fighting facitilites.
Elementary First Aid includes the DRABC of medical emergencies, CPR, recovery, bleeding and hypothermia.
Personal Safety and Social Responsibility includes dealing with emergency procedures, preservation of the marine environment, safe working practices, orders and their relation to shipboard duties, and human relationships on board ship.
Proficiency in Security Awareness includes an outline of the importance of ship security and the roles of those involved in its provision together with the requirements and measures to maintain ship security and how to recognise and report a security threat.
The Basic Safety Week takes place over 5 days and is delivered through a combination of theory and hands-on exercises with focus on the practical elements of sea survival, fire fighting and first aid.
Sea survival theory sessions are taught in the dedicated Red Ensign classrooms. The course also comprises a supervised compulsory liferaft launch, inversion and entry as well as individual and group based swimming activities in a secured area in the river in front of our training premises.
Fire fighting uses real smoke, fire and breathing apparatus along with fire hoses and extinguishers in our purpose built fire fighting training facility. Candidates’ competence is assessed through their active participation during the practical session and with a test at the end of the module.
First Aid is a hand-on course including the use of resuscitation ‘Annies’ and other essential equipment.
PSSR and Proficiency in Security Awareness are based upon group discussion and experiential scenarios.
There are no entry requirements for this course however, due to the physical nature of the exercises, we would advise that you obtain a seaman’s ENG1 medical certificate before attending to ensure that you are fit to take part. You must be over 18 years of age.
The cost of this course is £730.00 inc VAT.

MV Sea Trident is moored alongside our training establishment in Cowes.
Available on a full board basis @ £60 per person per night with a shared communal washroom or £65 for a shared en-suite (subject to availability).
