This 1½ day course is one of the four modules of Sea School’s STCW Basic Training (formerly Basic Safety Training). This course includes classroom training as well as practical assessments. These include righting and entering a liferaft, correctly donning survival suits and life vests, usually at a local swimming pool.
This course covers the required STCW training to meet:
- Ship Installed Liferaft
- Lifeboat and Liferaft equipment
- Emergency Positioning Equipment
- GMDSS Applications
- Lifeboat and Davit

Sea School’s USCG approved Proficiency in Survival Craft (Lifeboatman) course was developed to fulfill the requirements of the STCW Code. The course provides classroom and hands-on training in the use of lifeboats, life rafts and survival gear. Successful completion of this course meets STCW requirements for students applying for a Merchant Mariner Document endorsement as PSC.
The purpose of this course is to provide training for mariners to launch and take charge of a survival craft or a rescue boat in emergency situations.

Applicants for original U.S. Coast Guard licenses must document completion of a Coast Guard approved First Aid course, including CPR, within one year prior to application for the license. Our approved 8-hour course is also a part of the four element STCW Basic Training program. All aspects of adult CPR and First Aid are covered in this course as they relate to the maritime environment.
Course Schedule
