Any applicant who has successfully completed the Basic Training Refresher (MIDATL-68) course, comprised of our Basic Fire Fighting Refresher (MIDATL-735), Personal Survival Techniques Refresher (MIDATL-736), Personal Safety and Social Responsibility Refresher (MIDATL-841) and First Aid Refresher (MIDATL-870) courses, will satisfy the continued competency requirements for STCW Basic Training In STCW, as amended 2010, Basic Training in Section A-VI/1, 46 CFR 11.302(e) AND 46 CFR 12.602(e), AND, all of the tasks from the National Assessment Guidelines found in NVIC 08-14; PROVIDED the applicant has previously held a STCW Basic Training (A-IV/1) endorsement.

Applicants are not required to present completed record of assessment sheets when applying for the STCW endorsement.

I. Fire Fighting: 8 – hour REFRESHER

The objective of this course is to provide the mariner with the required firefighting training at an easily accessible and convenient location. This Firefighting Course will also provide hands on training with the equipment utilized at this facility and the equipment found on various vessels operating at this facility. A trainee successfully completing this course will be enabled to react in a correct manner in the event of an outbreak of fire, to take appropriate measures for the safety of personnel and of the ship, and to use the fire appliances correctly. The mariner will also be able to state and demonstrate that he has acquired knowledge and skills, which, in some instances, will enable him to identify and correct defects and thus prevent fire from occurring. This course is designed to fulfill the requirements of STCW Code 95 with respect to this “Basic Training – Basic Firefighting” REFRESHER requirement. It is designed to give the individual a level of knowledge beyond simple vessel familiarization for those seafarers who have basic safety or pollution-prevention duties.

II. Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities: 2 – hour REFRESHER

The objective of this course is to provide appropriate training or instruction in the following personal safety and social responsibilities areas as set out in STCW Code Table A-VI/1-4 which include:

  • Comply with emergency procedures;
  • Take precautions to prevent pollution of the marine environment;
  • Observe safe working practices;
  • Understand orders and be understood in relation to shipboard duties; and,
  • Contribute to effective human relationships on board ship.

Individuals will be required to demonstrate competence in accordance with the methods and criteria for evaluating competence tabulated in columns 3 and 4 of those tables through examination and/or continuous assessment throughout the course.

III. Personal Survival Techniques: 8 – hour REFRESHER

The objective of this course is to provide appropriate recurrent training or instruction to survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment as set out in STCW Code Table A-VI/1-4.
Individuals will be required to demonstrate competency in accordance with the methods and criteria for evaluating competence tabulated in columns 3 and 4 of those tables through examination and/or continuous assessment throughout the course.

IV. Elementary First Aid: 6 – hour REFRESHER

Successful completion of this course will prepare any seafarer on a sea-going merchant ship to provide immediate basic medical care at the scene of an accident or other medical emergency until the arrival of a person with advanced first aid skills or the person in charge of the medical care on board. Specifically, this course covers the training in elementary first aid specified in STCW Code Table A-VI/1-3, take immediate action upon encountering an accident or other medical emergency, which includes the following knowledge, understanding and proficiency:

  • Assessment of the needs of casualties and threats to safety
  • Appreciation of body structure and functions
  • Understanding of immediate measures to be taken in cases of emergency.

Individuals will be required to demonstrate competence in accordance with the methods and criteria for evaluating competence tabulated in columns 3 and 4 of those tables through examination and/or continuous assessment throughout the course.

Please bring the following items when you report for class:

  • Appropriate swim wear (i.e. shorts with liner- no basketball shorts) (one piece bathing suit for women)
  • Towel (not provided by MAMA)
  • Long pants
  • Closed Toe Shoes, or Safety Shoes, No Sneakers or Athletic footwear, Please
  • Socks
  • An extra T-shirt
